Two held for credit card fraud

Gulf Today - 29 August, 2012

Two Malaysian visitors have confessed to attempting to swindle electronic gadgets using counterfeit credit cards.

Both males, OS, 19 and TS, 22, appeared at the Dubai Criminal Court, each charged with six counts related to forgery and fraud while inside an electronics outlet in Festival City area on May 14.

OS was charged with duplicating two government stamps attributed to both the Dubai and Abu Dhabi International airports.

He allegedly used them in committing forgery on an Indonesian passport belonging to someone identified as Mack.

He was also accused of counterfeiting three Visa cards and a Master Card in the names of Mark. He reportedly used the Visa card and passport in attempting to swindle two iPhone 4Ss worth Dhs6,920 from the electronics outlet.

In court, he denied all the charges apart from attempting to swindle the iPhones. “The forgeries were made by fugitive accomplices of mine,” he insisted.

Similarly, TS was charged with duplicating two government stamps attributed to both aforementioned airports and using them to commit forgery on an Indonesian passport belonging to Shun.

He was also accused of counterfeiting a Visa card in the name of Shun. Besides, he reportedly used the passport and the card in attempting to swindle two iPad 4 devices all worth Dhs8,000.

TS held the same claims that the forgeries were made by someone else. “I only tried to purchase iPads with them,” he claimed.

The duo urged the panel presided by Judge Hamad Abdul Jawwad to forgive them. The case continues on Sept.20 after public prosecutors were ordered to present the counterfeits before court.

Deal goes flat

Meanwhile, an Egyptian salesman HS, 25 testified that while on duty at around 4:30pm, the duo entered the outlet and started examining the electronic goods on display.

OS said he would buy two iPhones and proposed to pay by credit card. “He identified himself using the passport of Mark, and gave me a Visa card. I placed it into the teller machine to deduct Dhs6,920 for the iPhones. “Upon completing the transaction and handing OS the card and a purchase receipt,” HS narrated “his accomplice TS was quick to give me a credit card and purchase two iPads,” he said.

While HS was trying to deduct the price of the iPads from TS’s credit card an email alert landed in the outlet’s inbox notifying that the first transaction was executed using a counterfeit Visa card. He immediately contacted the police who rushed in to apprehend the two suspects.
