Cops urge vigilance during festival

Gulf Today - 19 August, 2012

Dubai Police urged holidaymakers to be vigilant even as it wished happy moments to all people on UAE soil, according to police sources.

The Dubai Police Deputy Commander in Chief, Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, urged all citizens, residents and visitors not to disrupt the joy of Eid by disregarding its timely instructions.

The police advise the public to avoid leaving cash and valuables in unattended vehicles or putting it in translucent bags while on beaches.

Al Mazeina urged those who frequent the sea for swimming to be cautious. “They should abide by all safety measures and avoid venturing out to deep waters. This exposes them to sudden changes caused by sea currents,” he explained.

As for those who go on desert tours or cruise the sea with boats and yachts, he urged them to first check on the sea and weather conditions through official sources.

They should also notify the Dubai Police Operations Room on toll-free number 999 or 04 6095555, he said.

He requested them to comply with instructions published by the Dubai Police thorough the various media.

Al Mazeina stressed that the Dubai Police was well prepared to enhance security in the emirate.

“The police have beefed up patrols on the internal and external roads of the emirate besides markets, commercial areas and places that witness congestion in such times,” he said.

However, he appealed to owners of houses and villas in Dubai’s neighbourhoods and outskirts to register with the Home Security Programme if they would spend long periods away.

Subscribers can contact the police through its website or by contacting the CID number 800243 or visiting any nearby police station to register in the programme free of charge.

Safety regulations

Al Mazeina urged parents to exercise vigilance in dealing with children during the holiday. “They should not leave them out of sight besides advising them not to accept ‘welcome’ requests from unknown people.

They should make sure the kids are not subjected to any suspicious enticement. They should warn them against unexpected accidents while playing on public roads and the dangers of firecrackers.”

Al Mazeina stressed the need to comply with safety regulations regarding homes to avoid fire incidents as he also hoped that the public avoids things that might rob them of Eid’s joy.

They should not keep valuables at home and should make sure that water and electricity are switched off, says the Deputy Director of the CID’s Administration and Control, Colonel Jamal Salem Al Jalaf.

During last year’s Eid Al Fitr holiday, the police’s Command and Control Room received 22,880 calls. Some 2,156 were personal enquiries, 698 accidental, 254 unnecessary and 111 were referred to its call centre (901).

Thus, the Dubai Police General Department of Operation called upon the public not to contact (999) except for emergencies. It advised that they should contact the police call centre on (901) for general enquiries.
