Former health worker escapes with police vehicle

Saudi Gazette - 14 August, 2012

Police here have arrested a man who stole a patrol vehicle and escaped to a remote mountain area.

Investigators located the man’s whereabouts after tracking down radio signals coming from the stolen vehicle. They found him hiding in a mountainous area south of Taif. The vehicle was hidden in the bushes nearby.

Police suspect that the man may be suffering from psychological problems. He has been referred to a hospital in Taif to check on his health and ensure he is mentally fit to stand trial.

After stealing the police vehicle, the man drove around shooting in the air to frighten truck drivers in the area. He even fired at another patrol vehicle.

The man’s family had reported him missing last Friday after he left the house with SR127,000 in cash. He had told his family that he wanted to spend the money on charity in Yemen. He divorced his wife few months ago and left his five children with her.

The money he carried was his retirement benefit from the Directorate of Health Affairs in Taif, where he used to work as a nurse. He was forced to retire early because of deteriorating health conditions.
