Iran warns of 'dark future' in Mideast

Kuwait News Agency - 10 August, 2012

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has warned that future of the region "would be dark" in case all efforts for resolving the Syrian crisis ended in failure.

Salehi, speaking at a news conference, held late on Thursday after conclusion of the consultative meeting on Syria, said, "We hope all concerned powers come forward with sensible proposals so that to get the region out of this crisis." He stressed that the Syrians should play the major role for resolving the problem "and we can play role of assisting." He expressed hope that the UN would name a successor to Kofi Annan, as a joint envoy of the Arab League and the UN, to pursue Annan's mission of seeking to resolve the Syrian crisis.

Salehi praised Annan's six-point plan for tackling the conflict, namely its call to end the violence and establish an interim unity authority.

The minister called on the Syrian opposition to take part in administration of their country to pave way for speedy reforms.
