Gulf Daily News - 10 August, 2012

Significant steps towards serious dialogue and an end to street violence were taken yesterday.

Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa continued meetings with heads and representatives of political societies in a positive atmosphere, to reach and promote understanding between all entities in the political arena.

Shaikh Khalid highlighted continued endeavours to support the role of political societies in furthering the process of democratic evolution and sustained development.

He also stressed the importance of collaboration and joint efforts of all concerned to reach a common ground in the field of political action and promote further development through existing constitutional institutions under the rule of law.

The minister emphasised that it is necessary for everyone to bear their national and religious responsibilities and renounce all forms of violence through open measures, and without providing any political cover for criminal acts.

He urged everybody to shun acts of violence and malicious destruction of public or private property, and to continue giving advice to youths to encourage them so that they refrain from unruly criminal acts against the law and religion.

Shaikh Khalid asserted that consensual views of the National Dialogue are being implemented, with efforts underway to build upon the achievements.

He said national consensus will continue to form the foundation of any development process, adding that legitimate means of voicing demands and expressing viewpoints are essential guarantees to protect civil freedom.

"Unlicensed gatherings, rallying, inflaming of religious and sectarian rhetoric and sentiments, and the tendency towards separatism, conflict with the principles of good political practice based on respect of diversity, legitimacy and the rule of law, the minister said. Shaikh Khalid reiterated that the internal affairs of the kingdom must be steered away from any regional conflicts, sectarian polarisation, foreign meddling or interference.
