Anti-begging drive nets 103

Khaleej Times - 03 August, 2012

Dubai Police have arrested 103 beggars including 14 women since the launch of its anti-begging campaign on July 17.

Colonel Mohmmed Rashid Al Muhairi, Director of Tourism Security Department of the Dubai police said the campaign will go on till the end of Ramadan.

He said that in order to avoid the police in public places and mosques, the beggars started going to Ramadan Majles and disturbed the owners. He said that an Asian man went to one of those Majles and wanted to take advantage of his disability, so he begged the people for money. When they told him to wait he escaped as he feared they would get him arrested. Some people even tried to catch him as they thought he had stolen something but to no avail as the beggar ran and people realized that his body was not crooked.

He added that another police official had caught an Asian who was begging car drivers to give him Dh10 because he wanted to go to Sharjah and did not have enough money. But when the police searched him they found Dh19000 in his pocket.

Al Muhairi pointed out that a beggar who was arrested earlier admitted during interrogation that he had entered the UAE through the airport. Although he was using an artificial leg he walked normally but as he entered the county he removed the artificial limb and sat in public places for begging so that people would give him money for his disability.
