People of different hues in the Middle East may have been wondering about what sort of a president would Mitt Romney make. They would also be giving a lot of thought to the policy he will follow in the Middle East if he won the presidential elections in November. The answers are clear as the stars on a clear, cloudless night sky. Well, two things are evident and one is that Romney will make an ignorant president needing good advisers and second he will be blatantly pro-Israeli and not a wee bit sympathetic and considerate to the Palestinian cause. It should not surprise anyone if Romney became the most pro-Israeli US president ever.

The reasons for this prognosis are clear. During the course of his visit to Israel, he made a number of asinine remarks. One ascribed the economic gap between the Israelis and Palestinians due to “culture”. “Culture makes all the difference,” said this wise guy having ambitions to be the leader of the free world. Is he an ignoramus ? Or is he indifferent to the aspirations of the Palestinians? Almost all sensible people everywhere know the reasons for economic problems of the Palestinians. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have said that Israeli restrictions on the movement of goods and people and other measures have choked growth. The fact that cannot be ignored is that the Israelis, especially under the rule of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are doing their best to throttle the Palestinians. All policies are geared towards this ignoble aim. Under such circumstances, only a miracle can help the Palestinians walk without crutches. But then even miracles are not occurring for the Palestinians who have embarked on a lonely trek with even the United States and many of its allies now almost indifferent to their plight. And if President Barack Obama loses the presidential elections and Romney becomes the next president with some of the money for his campaign put up by the Israelis, it seems like the White House will become a Zionist nest. The danger then will be beyond words.

At the moment, the road ahead seems hazy for the Palestinians. With more and more settlements coming up in the West Bank and Arab East Jerusalem to the accompaniment of American silence, the future seems uncertain for them. The Middle East peace process is entombed in the crypt of global indifference. Giving it oxygen and resuscitating it will be difficult and will take time. But it will have to be done some day soon for the sake of stability in the Middle East, which is directly linked to global peace and security. And if this is not done in time, the repercussions could be terrible. An expert or adviser with enough knowledge of Middle East issues must make Ronmey understand this truth at the earliest.
