Traffic dept launches safe driving campaign

Gulf Times - 30 July, 2012

The Traffic Department is holding various awareness activities during Ramadan as part of its safe driving campaign. The department has intensified its patrols with the help of Internal Security Force (Lakhwiya) and Rescue Police (Al-Fazaa), especially during Iftar as people tend to speed to reach home before sunset.

The patrols distribute dates and water to motorists, advising them not to speed and to avoid accidents. They also give them awareness leaflets that consist of traffic safety instruction, safe driving rules, the importance of technical inspection of vehicles and the need to be alert while driving.

The leaflets also highlight the necessity of fastening seat belts and how they should be used by pregnant women.

Other issues include warning against using mobile phones and its grave consequences. It also asks those who drive motor bikes to wear helmets and avoid driving behind trucks and vehicles with falling objects.

As part of the programme, activities of Ramadan and safe driving drive started at Landmark complex on Thursday, Ramadan 7 with co-operation of Qatargas.

Lt Adel Hussein, activities supervisor for the drive, said that these commercial complexes had been selected for the activities as people of different category groups gather there and it is possible to convey messages for more people. He added that this is the fourth year in row that the Traffic Department is holding this campaign with the co-operation of Qatargas.

The activities include traffic quizzes for adults and questions on traffic rules, safe driving and vehicle safety, and winners get prizes.

Several games have been set up for kids such as snakes and ladders with good and bad traffic manners. Stage show on the theme “speed and disobedience to parents’ and on ‘Carangao’ are also to be held. Traffic brochures and DVDs with awareness films are also distributed to visitors.

Lt Hussein said that the events are planned at Hyatt Plaza and The Mall. The activities at Hyatt Plaza will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:30pm until midnight.
