Shops violating price regulations to be fined

Saudi Gazette - 28 July, 2012

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has made it imperative for all shops to clearly display the price of every product and item they sell and warned violators that they will face severe penalties including fines up to SR100,000.

The warning was sent by the ministry in the form of a circular to the chambers of commerce and industry in all of the Kingdom’s regions. The circular was signed by Muhammad Al-Hedhaili, director-general of the anti-commercial fraud department in the ministry.

Al-Hedhaili said regulations stipulate that the price of a package should be clearly printed and visible and said the price should be placed either on the product or on a tag securely affixed to it.

He said the label has been defined as a written, marked, stamped, printed or graphic matter affixed or appearing upon the commodity or a package containing a commodity.

He warned that the violating business owners will be fined SR100,000 and their shops will be closed for one year if the violation is repeated.

Al-Hedhaili urged all merchants and retailers to strictly abide by the ministry’s regulations and said that the ministry is determined more than ever to implement this regulation in order to protect consumers from merchants who tamper with prices.
