Kuwaiti MPs hail 'victory'

Kuwait Times - 19 July, 2012

A number of Kuwaiti MPs yesterday welcomed the bombing that killed several high-ranking Syrian officials, including the defense minister, and described it as a signal for the victory of the Syrian revolution.

Former speaker and MP Ahmad Al-Saadoun said on his Twitter account that the Arab Spring protests have brought down the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen, and “now we are seeing signals for the victory of the Syrian people”.

“Who would have thought that with the onset of the holy month of Ramadan will come the indications for the downfall of this oppressive Syrian regime after the killing of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s top aides,” Saadoun said. Saadoun said that the criminal regime of Assad has used all types of weapons, including internationally banned arms, against peaceful protesters who are demanding freedom and dignity.

Former MP and a member of the 2012 Assembly Mohammad Al-Kandari strongly lashed out at Iran and its allies for condemning the bombing in Damascus as they “saw that as a signal for the fall of their Baathist-Alawite regime of Assad”.

Islamist MP Khaled Al-Sultan welcomed the new developments in Syria and congratulated the Syrian people for the imminent victory against the Assad regime.

In another development, opposition MPs continued to warn the government against any plan to change the electoral law or the voting system.

MP Musallam Al-Barrak said that taking part in the forthcoming elections if the electoral law or the voting system are changed “amounts to a treason of the Kuwaiti constitution”. Barrak said that the Popular Action Bloc will boycott the general elections if the changes take place before the elections.

“We will consider the participation in elections both in voting or contesting as candidates despite the changes as a betrayal to the constitution,” said Barrak, adding that the Popular Bloc will not field candidates and will urge its members to boycott voting. He also reiterated that the bloc along with other allies will stage protests against the government in case the changes were introduced.

Saadoun also warned the government against what he called “committing a forgery against the will of the people through attempts by forces of corruption and enemies of the constitutional system”.

Also, Shaye Al-Shaye, a member of the 2012 Assembly, yesterday said that his name was placed on a statement issued by the opposition majority bloc without consulting him.

He said that he had expressed reservations about a number of points included in the document. Shaye is one of the 36 members of the bloc.
