Sacked workers are reinstated

Gulf Daily News - 16 July, 2012

Nearly all workers sacked during last year's unrest have been reinstated, it has emerged.

Around 92 per cent of people who lost their jobs are back at work, says a unit in charge of following up the implementation of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry recommendations.

"In cases where reinstatement to original jobs was not possible, the government took it upon itself to reinstate workers to other jobs of equal grades, pay and benefits," said its head Dana Al Zayani.

"In the government's endeavour to restore matters back to normal and in the spirit of national reconciliation, the government directed all private companies to reinstate 2,462 dismissed workers."

Ms Al Zayani said this included 1,765 dismissed workers employed by private companies partially owned by the government.

"To date, most of them were reinstated. Only 12 workers were rejected by some companies and they are seeking litigation," she said.

Ms Al Zayani said the government was also in constant contact with private sector companies to encourage them to reinstate another 697 dismissed workers. "To date, 160 workers were reinstated to their previous jobs, while 370 were hired by other companies," she said.

"Reinstatement of 42 workers was declined by their companies. The workers filed labour claims against their employers, which are currently being reviewed by the courts."

Meanwhile, Ms Al Zayani said work was now nearing completion on the rebuilding of five mosques that were demolished during the unrest.

She revealed another eight sites had been fenced off and work was nearing completion on procedures related to the allocation of nine more.

Ms Al Zayani also emphasised the Civil Settlement Office at the Justice and Islamic Affairs Ministry had settled 17 cases with a compensation of $ 2.6 million (BD982,000) being paid out to victims of the unrest.
