Breast cancer centre to open in Sharjah

Khaleej Times - 19 June, 2012

A centre dedicated to treating breast cancer will be established by the Friends of Cancer Patients and the University Hospital Sharjah (UHS).

The centre, that will be operational in October and will be located at the UHS, will support early detection, diagnosis and treatment according to the same therapeutic protocols applicable in France. French surgeons, in collaboration with fellow surgeons from the UHS, will conduct cosmetic and plastic surgeries to preserve the breast in case of early cancer or reshape it.

The centre will be the first in the emirate to operate as a comprehensive breast cancer screening, diagnostic and treatment facility.

Announcing this on Wednesday, Ameera BinKaram, president and founding member of the Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), said: “The establishment of this centre, the first in Sharjah to offer comprehensive breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment, is a significant milestone for FoCP and Pink Caravan.”

The centre, which will run as a twin to leading European anti-cancer centre, the Institute Gustave-Roussy (IGR) in France, will be financed by FoCP.

Dr Hussam Hamdi, professor of surgery and vice-chancellor of University of Sharjah for Medical and Health colleges, said: “The centre will support early detection, diagnosis and treatment campaigns according to the same therapeutic protocols applicable in France. French surgeons in collaboration with their fellow surgeons from the University Hospital Sharjah will conduct cosmetic and plastic surgeries to preserve the breast in case of early detection or reshape the breast. These surgeries are conducted, currently, at the specialised breast cancer treatment centres”.

BinKaram added: “Awareness is perhaps the single greatest weapon in the fight against cancer. Early screening and effective treatment increase the survival rates and thanks to the tireless efforts of all of the parties involved here, we are able to, once again, provide a service that will not only improve the standard of living in our emirate and the entire UAE, but also will save lives.”
