Emirates News Agency-WAM - 17 June, 2012

The UAE on Saturday took part in the fourth foreign ministerial meeting of the international Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI), a global platform working towards achieving nuclear disarmament and fostering an international non-proliferation regime, in Istanbul, Turkey.

The UAE's delegation to the meeting was led by Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Foreign ministers of the initiative assessed the outcomes of the first meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference (RevCon) held in Vienna last month, moreover, they will discuss the initiative's contributions to the NPT RevCon process.

NPDI meeting also discussed the 2012 Middle East Conference, in which relevant countries will participate in later this year in December in Helsinki, Finland. Participants also discussed the outcome of Second NPDI Ministerial Meeting, 30 April-11 May 2011.

NPDI is a cross-regional group established jointly by Australia and Japan in 2010 to facilitate implementation of the consensus outcomes of the May 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. NPDI members include Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
