Pakistanis say country needs nuclear deterrence

Arab News - 01 June, 2012

The Pakistan Repatriation Council (PRC) held a symposium titled “Nuclear Technology — our need and obligation” on the occasion of 14th anniversary of “ Youme Takbir”
Pakistan detonated a nuclear device on May 28, 1998, in response to India’s detonation at the beginning of the same month.

Irshad Saleem, journalist and writer and the chief guest, said that acquiring nuclear deterrence for Pakistan was essential due to its geopolcetical situation in the region.

"However, it is very important to safeguard and keep full command and control as per international standard. We have to improve our image as a nation rather than one divided in several ethnic, religious or linguistic entities.

Over five million overseas Pakistanis living in North America, the UK and GCC countries could play a greater role in building the country’s economy, literacy and technical advancement if the rulers seriously develop strategic planning," Saleem said.

Community leader Mohammad Riaz Ghumman said that May 28 is an important day in the history of Pakistan for which Abdul Qadeer Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif deserve praise in helping the country achieve nuclear capability.

Agha Mohammad Akram, leader of Pakistan Peoples Community, said that although the country acquired nuclear capability for defense purpose, it failed to make use of this technology for the good of common people.

Tariq Mahmood, community leader, said that while some countries use nuclear technology for over 50 percent of their power generation, Pakistan uses less than 5 percent of it for this purpose.
