Changing the manners and behavioural patterns and making them positive ones is a fundamental process that leads to success of societies which is why there are awareness programmes designed with the objective of reinforcing positive behavioural traits among the members of the public. Positive behaviours — whether acquired or developed — often go hand in hand with realising achievements.
Naturally, some people develop negative traits which later turn into habits, such habits are not necessarily inherited from the society, however they become commonplace among a segment of the society. In the Omani case such qualities which can be seen in the street and in public places, are totally strange to the genuine values of the Omani society, which have been passed down generations for ages. Some visitors to public parks leave trash behind them, an inconsiderate behaviour that leads to many dire consequences, not the least of which is the spread of insects and flies causing health menace. These places are meant for entertainment, therefore we have to keep them clean so that others could get the chance to revel without annoyance. Some people are in the habit of throwing rubbish on the streets, ignoring the garbage bins that are available everywhere and unperturbed by the nuisance they are causing to others by their abominable behaviour.
Those who behave in such a way do not pay the slightest attention to the preservation of the environment. Worse, they do not bother about following the religious teachings or the proper etiquette dictated by the commonsense. A civilised person always pays attention to the environment. What the streets and public places look like always reflects the behaviour of the people inhabiting a specific place. It doesn’t require much effort for motorists or pedestrians to throw the rubbish in the waste bins that are to be found everywhere.
Let’s always take the saying: ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’ as a guide and apply it in our daily life, whether we are in public or private places, thus everyone makes his or her own individual contribution to stave off one of the most worrying phenomena facing the society.
The authorities concerned are exerting considerable efforts towards a clean and hygienic environment in the form of clean-up activities or campaigns that aim at increasing awareness about environmental issues. However, these efforts won’t be successful unless all society members put in effective contribution in preserving the environment by acting in a civilised way, keeping the public places clean and taking part in environment clean-up campaigns.
