Policy pay the Price

Gulf Daily News - 01 August, 2012

Bahrain has allocated BD90,000 as compensation for people whose property was damaged during police investigations.

Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa has issued the order as part of a major overhaul of the country's police service.

"These things happen in the line of duty, but we are compensating them for any damages," said Public Security chief Major-General Tariq Al Hassan during a Press conference yesterday at the Interior Ministry Officers' Club, Gudaibiya.

He revealed 14 policemen were already being investigated for violations, including 10 by the ministry and four by the Public Prosecution.

Committed

"Everybody should know that we are a responsible body committed to protect the country and people," said Maj-Gen Al Hassan.

"Any nature of violation where policemen have abused their power is taken seriously and proper procedures will be taken."

Maj-Gen Al Hassan also said more than 700 policemen had been injured since the start of the year.

He stated the attacks had continued throughout the holy month of Ramadan, including during prayer times, with officers being targeted with potentially lethal homemade weapons such as Molotov cocktails.
