Global demand for gas witnesses dynamic growth - study

Kuwait News Agency - 09 July, 2012

The global demand for natural gas has seen a remarkable growth in 2011, while the majority of gas reserves concentrated in the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, a new study showed.

"Against the background of an energy market beset by the Fukushima crisis, the Arab spring and economic uncertainty, 2011 saw dynamic growth in demand for natural gas, although developments varied widely from region to region," reads the study compiled by French energy expert Armelle Lecarpentier.

Lecarpentier also noted that gas supply has adapted to the dynamic growth seen in some regions (Asia particularly) and the climatic and economic variations seen in other markets (Europe).

"Growth in production continued in North America and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and was particularly dynamic in the Middle East. On the other hand, a lack of market outlets and the (maintenance) shutdown of several plants triggered an exceptional decline in European," she added.

The study pointed the growth in gas demand is led by the consumption of the emerging economies, particularly China and India.

"Led by China and India, Asia-Oceania was undoubtedly the powerhouse behind the rising global demand for gas, while the Middle East confirmed its leading international role as a producer and exporter.

"2011 also saw a turnaround in the market for LNG, which, impacted by the Fukushima disaster, saw its previous "bubble" reabsorbed. According to the provisional estimates published by Cedigaz, consumption of gas worldwide will have grown by around 3 percent in 2011 (3,216 billion cubic metres (Gm3) in 2010), and therefore in line with the general trend for the previous 10 years." Data also showed that majority of gas reserves concentrated in the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"According to Cedigaz, proven reserves of natural gas worldwide grew by 2.8 percent in 2010 to reach 195,308 Gm3 on 1st January 2011. They are concentrated in OPEC member countries (which hold 50 percent of global reserves) and the CIS (32 percent)," reads the study.
