UN official due to hold talks with Syrian opposition, gov't

Kuwait News Agency - 25 July, 2012

Visiting UN Under-Secretary General for Peace Keeping Operations Herve Ladsous is due to hold talks with leaders of the Syrian opposition later on Wednesday, spokeswoman of the international mission Sawsan Ghoshe said.

Ghoshe said in a statement that Ladsos would also hold talks with government officials and diplomats serving in Syria to assess conditions across the nation.

More than 100 members of the international mission of observers have left the country because they could not perform their mission; observing a cease-fire that has not been enforced.

Ghoshe indicated that the mission could pursue the operations with a smaller number of observers.

Currently, the observers are visiting hospitals to inspect the wounded and the shelters to assess conditions of citizens, struggling to survive the violence.

The UN had dispatched up to 300 observers to enforce a truce and pave way for dialogue to end the conflict.
