18 Syrian officers defect from Assad's regime to Turkey

Kuwait News Agency - 12 July, 2012

Up to 18 senior Syrian officers have arrived in Turkey defecting from Al-Assad's regime, according to the local media on Thursday.

Turkish daily newspaper, Yeni Safak, reported on its website that two colonels, six lieutenants, eight majors and two captains with their families and more than 400 Syrian citizens, mostly women and children, crossed the Turkish territories through villages in southern Turkey in the past 24 hours, and they were met by Turkish officials on the borders.

"Three of the Syrian citizens, who were wounded during the clashes that took place in their country, were taken to hospital, while the other dissidents were taken to a camp in Hatay and the rest to refugee camps in Sanliurfa," the newspaper added.

The Syrian refugee camps in Hatay provinces, Sanliurfa and Kilis host more than 36,000 Syrians, according to figures released by the Turkish Crisis Management Center on Monday.
