Iran urges UN to prevent arms smuggling into Syria

Kuwait News Agency - 12 July, 2012

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Wednesday that Iran calls for United Nations to take necessary moves to control Syrian borders and prevent arms smuggling into Syrian territories.

In statements carried by the official news agency (IRNA), Amir-Abdollahian said that Iranian senior officials in their talks with the UN-Arab League envoy on Syria, Kofi Annan, stressed the need to bring Syrian borders under control of the UN to prevent smuggling weapons to the Arab state.

He added that Annan's plan to end Syrian conflict was not successful due to arming the insurgents by the countries, which favor chaos in the country.

Iran expressed concern over creating obstacles to Annan's peace plan by certain countries, he said, noting that terrorist groups are acting in the country freely and this has overshadowed democratic demands.

If Syria's borders are checked, the insurgents cannot continue with sabotage, Amir-Abdollahian noted, adding that this will help the Syrian situation return to normalcy.

He made it clear that Iran believes that the Syrian crisis is political not military.

Annan visited Iran after his talks with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to brief Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Secretary General of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili on Geneva conference of Friends of Syria.
