Fabius calls Al-Assad 'murderer'

Kuwait News Agency - 06 July, 2012

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Friday labeled Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad "a murderer" and said he must leave power.

Speaking on "Europe 1" radio ahead of the opening of the third "Friends of Syria" conference here, Fabius also said that neither France, the United States nor Russia were willing to grant asylum to the Syrian leader.

He also said that it did not appear that even China would accept Al-Assad if he stepped down.

Almost 17,000 people have died in violence in Syria over the past 17 months and many are saying that there is a strong case for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to pursue Al-Assad and his regime for the massive repression in that period and for crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Russia indicated Thursday that Western nations have asked Moscow if it would accept Al-Assad but that it had rejected this suggestion "as a joke." During a visit to Paris last month, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said in answer to the same question that Al-Assad had spent more time in Paris than in Moscow so maybe he should come to France if the case arises.

"The question has been put (about) which State would want to receive (Al-Assad) and it seems neither Russia nor France nor the United States and probably not China" is willing, Fabius said in the radio interview.

"Bashar Al-Assad has to go. He is a murderer, he has to go," Fabius said.
