Global interest should be invested to resolve Syrian crisis: Kuwait FM

Kuwait News Agency - 06 July, 2012

Kuwait Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah underlined Thursday the need to invest the global support to the Syrian revolution to stop bloodshed and help meet the aspirations of Syrian people.

"The entire international community is following up the disturbing developments in Syria and we have to make use of that to help end the plight and achieve the aspirations of Syrian people," Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid, the current chair of the Arab League Council, told KUNA here. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid reaffirmed Kuwait's support to the plan of the UN-Arab League Joint Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan aiming to put an end to the violence in the Arab country.

He also urged Damascus to fulfill its obligations as per Annan's plan to resolve the crisis peacefully.

He lauded the Syrian opposition's recent meeting in Cairo as a positive step towards unifying Syrian political forces' vision for resolving the crisis and for a bitter future for Syria.

The Kuwaiti FM is due to take part in the "Friends of Syria" meeting scheduled to begin in the French capital on Friday.

Over 100 countries and representatives of the opposition Syrian National Council are taking parting part the meeting.

The Kuwaiti delegation also includes Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the Arab League Ambassador Jamal Mohammed Al-Ghoneim, Kuwait's Ambassador to Syria Aziz Rahim Al-Daihani and the Deputy Director of the Bureau of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign, Minister Plenipotentiary Saleh Salem Al-Loughani.

Friday's "Friends of Syria" meeting is aimed at coordinating efforts to stop the violence in the country that the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says has claimed the lives of 16,500 people.

The Paris meeting follows one in Tunis in February and another in April in Istanbul, both of which called in vain for tougher action against President Bashar al-Assad's government.

UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan drew up the Geneva plan adopted Saturday, but it has been heavily criticized by the Syrian opposition for not including a direct call for Assad to step down.

Among other issues to be discussed in Paris would be the sanctions imposed on Syria, setting up a mechanism for accountability "for those with blood on their hands" and humanitarian aid for those caught in the cross-fire.

China joined Russia Thursday in boycotting the meeting aimed at coordinating efforts to stop the bloody strife in Syria. Both powers are veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The United States, France, Britain, Germany and Arab nations Saudi Arabia and Qatar are leaders of the "Friends of Syria", which has more than 60 members, including most EU states and many Arab League countries.
