Lebanese leader urges public neutrality to Syrian conflict

Kuwait News Agency - 05 July, 2012

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman warned people in his country against supporting any side over the other, referring to the Syrian conflict.

The president said he intends to make his country a regional symbol in religious and social healing and dialogue, "instead of a stage for struggles in the region." Maintaining a neutral stance on the conflict in neighbouring Syria, he added "if we intended to serve the interests of a specific side in this 'Arab conflict', these moves would not benefit any of the two sides and would instead lead to damage to our country."

The remarks come after violence spilled into Lebanon recently from Syria, with clashes having occurred between supporters and opposition of the neighbouring Syrian regime.
