Arab League chief cautions against civil strife in Syria

Arab News - 14 June, 2012

Secretary-General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi on Wednesday reiterated the call for the Syrian government to carry out "credible reforms" that could live up to the aspirations of the people.

Speaking to KUNA on after a joint press conference with Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, Al-Arabi said he is not pessimistic about the prospects of the plan of the UN-League joint envoy to Syria Kofi Annan to end the 15-month long violence in the Arab country.

"Though the league suspended the membership of Damascus, it continues contacts with all concerned parties and apply all possible pressures on the Syrian regime," he noted.

Al-Arabi suggested launching an international contact group to coordinate the necessary pressures on the Syrian regime and force it into halting "the repressive campaign" against the opposition.

He highlighted the need for all parties to the conflict and the key international players to scale up the efforts in order to avoid "the looming civil strife."
