Arab League's chief meets Iraqi politician on internal situation Kuwait News Agency - 21 April, 2017
Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmad Abul-Gheit met Thursday with visiting chairman of Iraq's National Iraqi Alliance (NIA) Ammar Al-Hakim on the current situation in Iraq.
During the meeting, Abul-Gheit said that it is now necessary for all parties in Iraq to work together to safeguard the country's national unity and territorial integrity and to stop bloodshed, the league said in a release.
He emphasized that all Iraqi political groups need to ensure the rights of all Iraqi segments on the basis of citizenship, away from any sectarian, religious or racial basis, it added.
He also stressed the positive role that can be played by Iraqi influential figures like NIA leader Ammar Al-Hakim in this regard.
On his part, Al-Hakim briefed the Arab League's chief on all measures being taken by the Iraqi government to fight terrorism and extremism in the country; primarily the so-called Islamic State (IS).
He said his meeting with Abul-Gheit came within the framework of efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement to the current situation in Iraq, according to the release.
